Fayette County Jail (Detention Center) Inmates

Fayette County Jail, located in Kentucky, is an interesting jail. First of all, the Fayette jail inmates have the opportunity of going outside two times per day (assuming the weather is OK). There are many county jails across the US that don't ever allow inmates to go outside - this is unique. Probably most inmates in the jail have no idea how lucky they are in this regard.

Phones and visits

The jail also seems to have a fairly generous policy in regards to visiting. Each inmate is allowed 3-4 visitors per week - keep in mind that the average in a county jail is only 2 visitors per week (and there are some jails that either don't allow visitors or only allow one).

Inmates can talk to their family, but they do have to use money on their "books" to call out - this means that the only inmates who can actually make these calls are the ones who were booked in with a lot of cash (this immediately goes on their books), or those who have friends on the outside who are constantly sending money to the jail on their behalf.

Clothing

Most people don't realize it but county jails are almost always kept cold (even though it gets really hot in Kentucky in the middle of the summer). This is to control the outbreak of infection and diseases. Many inmates report never being able to actually feel warm during their entire stay.

Since the jail only provides a green jumpsuit, inmates generally prefer for their family to bring solid white undershirts and underwear (these are the only types of clothing that are allowed into the jail). Also, if the inmate is arrested while wearing these things he/she can bring them in as well.

Meals

Meals in jail are never very good, but compared to reviews from ex-inmates of places like Cook County and LA County, meals in Fayette actually don't seem that bad. The most popular meal among the inmates is Mexican night - make sure you don't lose your meals at the card table on Mexican night!

Which is another topic in and of itself - inmates like to gamble. Of course gambling is not allowed, but this doesn't really stop anybody. Since they are locked up all day with nothing else to do and no outside money to gamble (money on one inmate's book cannot be transferred to another), they tend to gamble food, such as meals and commissary.

Commissary consists of an ordering form that an inmate fills out where they order different types of foods, cards, etc. The money that is used to buy commissary comes from the inmates books - again, since the food can be so bad, if you know somebody in Fayette County you should put money on their books so they can eat well (or at least better than they would otherwise).

Conclusion

Nobody really wants to go to county jail - jail sucks - but if you or a loved one finds yourself in this situation in Fayette County, at least you aren't going to an overly dangerous or unclean place (both of which Cook County and Rikers Island are known for). Just make sure to visit your friend frequently, throw some money on his/her books every once in a while and be there for them when they are released.
